Somebody learned a piece of music off the page, exactly,
every marking observed, every repeat taken,
and played it through for a year without one wrong note.
In the spring they heard it played badly by somebody in the next room,
and stopped, and stood in the hallway until it finished.
They could not have told you what the difference was.
Only that there was one, and that it was not in the score,
and that the score had never at any point claimed it would be.
