A man tried for nine days to walk past the shop on the corner.
Nine days of walking past it,
nine days of thinking about nothing else.

On the tenth he went home the other way —
left at the roundabout, past the allotments, four minutes longer.
By November he had forgotten there was a shop on that corner,
and he had never once been brave.
